MTBE in Water
Supplies
Tri-S Environmental
is currently active with small to large water districts in
the United States in an advisement capacity on managing the
impacts of MTBE on water supplies. MTBE is a fuel additive
in gasoline designed to enhance combustion efficiency and
reduce air emissions. Unfortunately, MTBE is highly soluble
in water, has low absorbability and is seemingly recalcitrant
to biodegradation in natural settings. MTBE has caused numerous
water suppliers in the United States and Europe to shut down
groundwater supply wells due to the presence of MTBE. MTBE
is a suspected carcinogen to humans and has a California drinking
water goal (maximum contaminant level-mcl) of 13 parts per
billion-ppb (micrograms per liter-ppb) and a secondary mcl
of 5 ppb.
Groundwater
Transport & Remediation
Tri-S Environmental
is involved with applied research in numerous areas of groundwater
transport and remediation. Specifically, we are examining
the interaction of biodegradation and mass transport of a
variety of different chemical classes in groundwater systems.
The removal of hydrocarbons from soil and groundwater systems
using a variety of methodologies is part of our ongoing remediation
technology review program. Finally, we are in the process
of developing watershed monitoring programs for specific water
purveyors to ensure their surface and ground water supplies
are protected in the new century and beyond. For more information,
